Understanding this relationship is not optional if you intend to trade responsibly on a platform that offers 50:1, 100:1, or even higher leverage.
Margin is not a static number. When you open a standard position in EUR/USD, your broker may require 2% margin, meaning you need $2,000 of your own capital to control $100,000 notional value. That is the baseline under normal market conditions. But volatility changes everything. Brokers calculate margin requirements based on the expected range of price movement over a given period, often using a metric like the Average True Range or implied volatility from options markets. When volatility spikes, the statistical probability that a currency pair will swing several hundred pips in a single day increases dramatically. In response, your broker must protect itself from the risk that your position will move so far against you that your deposited margin becomes insufficient to cover the loss. The result is a margin increase that can happen with no warning and no change to your trade’s direction.
Consider the Swiss franc on January 15, 2015. The Swiss National Bank unexpectedly removed the cap against the euro. Volatility exploded. Within minutes, EUR/CHF dropped by 30% in some liquidity pools. Brokers who had not dynamically adjusted their margin requirements faced catastrophic losses because traders with leveraged positions could not meet the sudden surge in required collateral. After that event, nearly every reputable broker introduced dynamic margin models. Today, if a major economic release, a central bank decision, or a geopolitical shock causes implied volatility to double, your margin requirement can double as well. If you were already using 80% of your available margin, that increase will trigger a margin call or an automatic liquidation, not because your trade was wrong, but because the market’s potential movement became larger.
This is where advanced traders separate themselves from the crowd. They plan their position sizes not just around the current volatility, but around the volatility they expect during the holding period. If economic data is scheduled for release during your trade’s lifespan, you must calculate how much margin you will need if the implied volatility jumps by 50% or 100%.
